Patriot William Byers

Our patriot is William Byers whose memorial stone is placed in the Old Abbottsville Cemetery, Van Buren Township. Records indicate Lot 1& 2.

Byers was a Soldier in the American Revolutionary War. He was in the Virginia Militia with a rank of Private. He volunteered for service in the spring of 1781 for three months and volunteered a second time for five months that same year. Byers participated in the Battle of Yorktown which was considered the final major land battle of the American Revolution. He was one of the guards who took prisoners of Cornwallis Army to Augusta at which place he was discharged late November or the first of December in 1781. Byers was born in Virginia on July 5, 1764 and died in 1834 in Darke County Ohio

Van Buren Township

Settlers started to settle around 1820 in this township. William was a brother to Isaac and David Byers. In 1838 the township was organized. In the Beers book, we read accounts of 1-5 feet of water covered the surface of the land which was drained later.
